A fair to remember; renewed Placer County Fair draws crowds

While the final figures are still being tallied, the community’s response to last week’s re energized Placer County Fair is being deemed as a success, according to Placer Valley Tourism officials. The fair opened on Thursday, June 21 and ran through Sunday, June 24, with impressive crowds attending on every day.

“County fairs are truly remarkable as they bring the community together. It was such a privilege to be part of that experience this year and to see how much fun everyone had either participating in or attending the fair,” said David Attaway, CEO of Placer Valley Tourism.

This year, Placer Valley Tourism presented the event themed as “Renew your love of fair” with one long-term goal in mind, to showcase everything that Placer Country has to offer, not only in Roseville where the event took place at the newly renovated @theGrounds, but throughout the entire county.

Putting together the event in very little time after completion of the recent multi-million dollar remodel, Placer Valley Tourism made great strides toward that long-term goal with an event that was much improved over previous years.

“We made great strides to achieving our long-term goal of making the Placer County Fair truly a showcase of all that Placer County has to offer,” said Attaway. ““We can’t wait to start planning next year’s fair and continue to expand on our vision for future fairs to come.”

The recent re-launched edition of the once-failing Placer County Fair focused on increasing  the local participation in still exhibits, agriculture, and food and beverage. With the recent renovations complete to @theGrounds, fairgoers were happy with the transformation of Jones Hall as it was home to the still exhibits. Utilizing Jones Hall allowed for more entries and a better layout so that the talents of both adults and youth in the county could be enjoyed by all.

“This entire place has just made an amazing transformation,” said Maryann Simpson, who enjoyed viewing the many forms of artwork,  photography and hand-crafted entries each year. “It seemed as if there were a lot more entries this year and their presentation was so wonderful. It’s definitely nice to see the fair get back to community.”

Placer Place opened to rave reviews. Johnson Hall was converted into Placer Place, which showcased local artisans and entertainers along with a local Wine & Ale lounge. The Wine & Ale lounge featured local wineries and breweries, where fairgoers could either purchase a tasting or glass. There were many repeat customers throughout the four days.

Safety of the animals at the fair was  one of Placer Valley Tourism’s main goals with re–energizing the fair.  Previously, failing barns and a lack of maintenance resulted in a loss of interest for participants.

This year, with the cleaned up barns, the animals and their human enjoyed a much better experience than in years past. The Junior Livestock Auction had a great turn out with community participation. (See related story).

When it came to food, Roseville’s own Randy Peters Catering was a concessionaire, which again received rave reviews.  The grounds were home to savory dining options, along with all the fair favorites such as corn dogs, cotton candy and funnel cakes.  Peters is also on track for the concessions at the All American Speedway.

“ We are excited to have Randy Peter’s on-board as our new long-term concessionaire,” said Kim Summers of Placer Valley Tourism.  “They are great to work with and represent local through and through.”

In the coming weeks, Placer Valley Tourism will have more details on attendance figures and the event’s success, along with a look at what is ahead in 2019 as the event looks to grow on its recent success.
