Russian orphans to visit area
Date Published: March 2008
Last summer, Stephanie Rich and Alexandra Haynes of Granite Bay, Jeff Alexander of Folsom, and Troy Pankoski of Auburn, spent a week at a Russian orphanage.
The group became very concerned for these children who lack most of the things many take for granted.
Although they found the staff of the orphanage to be caring and hard working, prospects for children who leave the orphanage system are grim. Statistically, one in 10 commits suicide and up to 80 percent turn to drugs, crime or prostitution.
With the hope of breaking this cycle, the group will host five of these students and two of their teachers in the community for the month of June. They are top students and have been studying English.
Through this visit, the group hopes to expose the children to U.S. culture, help improve their English and give them a once-in-a-lifetime educational and cultural experience. Additionally, the group hopes the experience will motivate these children to seek a productive, responsible lifestyle and family life (most have never lived in a family situation).
Currently, the group is seeking contributions to cover their travel expenses. Donations can be made to the Tilsit Orphan Education Fund, a nonprofit organization.
