8 ways to stay fit in '08

1. Join a gym

With the number of gyms in the area this shouldn't be too hard. Join a large commercial gym like Gold's Gym; a multi-faceted facility like Roseville Health and Wellness; a low-impact, women only club like Curves; or hire a personal trainer and work out in your own home. If you don't want to commit to a gym, try a class in yoga or pilates at one of the many fine establishments in Granite Bay.

2. Play a sport

Whether golf or soccer, there are plenty of opportunities to play. The Granite Bay area boasts three golf courses (Granite Bay Golf Club, Rolling Greens in Roseville and Indian Creek in Loomis), a tennis club (Granite Bay Tennis Club) and several places to ride horses. Or you can head to any of the many parks in Granite Bay. Ball and soccer fields can be found at Granite Bay Community Park, Douglas Ranch Park, Treelake Village Park and Ronald L. Feist Park. Tennis and basketball courts can be found at Treelake Village Park and Ronald L. Feist Park.

3. Take a walk

Folsom Lake is a great place to walk. Plenty of trails and great scenery, but there are many walking paths in neighborhood parks and communities as well. Whatever your pace, getting out and walking is a great way to stay fit. If you are a morning person, try waking up to a morning walk each day. If you are a night owl, check out the stars with an after dinner walk.

4. Play with your kids

Not only will this get them off the couch and outside, you will have some family bonding fun. Great games for the whole family are tag (and all it's variations), red light, green light, mother may I, or make up your own family game with everyone pitching in a rule.

5. Hold family dance night

Once or twice a week have everyone pick two songs, then everyone dances to all the songs. A great way to expose each other to different music styles AND stay fit. Dances can be silly or serious as long as everyone keeps moving.

6. Get a physical

Before starting any regular fitness plan, it's best to start with a healthy body. Get a check up and notify your doctor of your fitness plans to make sure there are not any health concerns. Look online for tips on avoiding injury through proper equipment and preparation (like stretching).

7. Eat for energy

Make wise choices in the types of foods you eat to keep your energy levels high. Keep a food diary if necessary to think about how many calories you consume each day. Make sure your output matches your input. And don't starve yourself. You wouldn't drive a car with an empty tank, don't drive your body on an empty stomach.

8. Join a class or club

A neighborhood walking club or a weekly yoga workout will help keep you motivated and active. Whether karate, jogging, sword fighting or boxing, whatever intrigues you seek it out. Can't find one to suit? Start one yourself. Put up neighborhood signs or an ad in the paper for like-minded individuals.
