Service clubs offer community heroes a place to do good works

4-H

Eureka/Granite Bay 4-H Club will hold their next enrollment meeting 7 p.m. Jan. 8, at the Granite Bay Library, 6475 Douglas Blvd.

Projects include rabbits, rocketry, baking, beginning sewing, organic gardening, knitting, primary arts and crafts, poultry, dog agility and scrapbooking.

Children 5 years and older are invited to attend. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to register.

Boy Scouts

Granite Bay Boy Scout Troops 48 and 331 meet 7 p.m. weekly on Mondays at Bayside Church. For more information about upcoming activities or joining Troop 48 or 331, visit www.troop48.us.

Troop 121 meets 7 p.m. the first and third Thursdays at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay and Cavitt Junior High.

The Ironhorse Dstrict will be hosting the fifth annual Christmas in January community collection drive Jan. 5-6 at Cavitt Junior High. Residents are invited to come by 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days with non-perishable food, furniture, sleeping bags, clothing, household items, toys, bikes, books, prescription eye glasses, old cell phones, personal hygiene kits and more. On Sunday the event will also include the Eagle Scout Memorial Blood Drive. BloodSource will be set up at Cavitt Junior High 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6. This drive is dedicated to the memory of Oakmont teacher and Scout volunteer Robert Bell, Eagle Scout Nick Goudberg and Scout parent Shawn McNamara. Granite Bay Boy Scout Troop 121 and the Granite Bay Kiwanis Club will coordinate the 18th annual real Christmas trees recycling drive during the first weekend in January. Curbside pickup is $10 per tree and will be set for Jan. 5-6. Eligible homes will receive a flyer in their neighborhood and to participate, will simply place their tree at the curb by 9 a.m. Sat., Jan. 5 with a check made out to Boy Scout Troop 121 in a plastic bag. Or, for $5 drop off your tree at Cavitt Junior High between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Jan. 5-6. For information, call Bruce McCormick at 730-0588.

DAR

Gold Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, charitable, lineage society dedicated to patriotism, historic preservation and education. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

Destination Imagination

Destination ImagiNation is a place where kids take what they know and what they are good at and learn to apply it to solve challenges, working together and cooperatively with a team and pushing the limits of imagination to best not their competition, but themselves.

The local DI group will hold a Bunco Fundraiser 5:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay. Cost is $25 and includes dinner catered by Strings as well as Bunco with prizes. There will also be a raffle and silent auction. Proceeds benefit the DI teams at EUSD and GBHS.

Friends of the GB Library

Friends of the Granite Bay Library, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit support group that sponsors many events throughout the year. Its sole purpose is to enhance the quality of the library's services and collections through its memberships and fundraising activities.

Girl Scouts

The Granite Hills service unit serves girls in the Eureka Union School District, including Granite Bay.

The Girl Scout movement teaches school-age girls to be strong and comfortable in their own skin. Local troops meet at various locations and times throughout the year.

Troops are gearing up for cookie sales - watch for presales to begin Jan. 11.

Girl Scouts will host a free Princess party

Princess Party event open to all girls in kindergarten through third-grade who are not already Girl Scouts. Event is 6:30-8 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Payley's Event Center, 1915 Douglas Blvd., Roseville. Kiwanis Club

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

On January 5 and 6th, club members will be helping the local boy scout troop collect Christmas trees and preparing them for the chipper. The club is busy planning for the joint Crab Fest (Jan. 26) with the Granite Bay Rotary is currently underway.

The club holds regular meetings at 7 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Events Center at Raley's on Douglas and Auburn-Folsom Road. This month's meetings are Jan. 9 and 23. The public is invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.

Key Club

The Granite Bay High School Key Club meets every other Wednesday (when school is in session) at 2:45 p.m. in Room 658 at Granite Bay High School.

Lions Club

As an ongoing project in their efforts to help with blind/sight related relief, the Granite Bay Lions Club collects eyeglasses. Donations are received by Kevin Lockhart of Granite Bay Vision.

The Lions hold regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Activities Center of Granite Bay at Folsom Lake. This month's meetings will be Jan. 2 and 16.

MOMS Club

The Granite Bay and East Roseville MOMS Club was formed in 2006 to provide a social network for families residing within the Eureka School District. The club provides the opportunity to meet local families and share activities with parents and their children.

National Charity League

The National Charity League (NCL) is a national philanthropic organization for seventh- through 12th-grade girls and their mothers. Its primary goal is to provide community service while fostering mother-daughter relationships and encourage leadership development and cultural experiences.

RANN

The Roseville Area Newcomers and Neighbors is a social club serving residents of Roseville, Granite Bay, Loomis, Rocklin, Folsom, Lincoln and Auburn. It is organized for the purpose of welcoming and introducing newcomers to the area, as well as giving established residents a chance to explore new interests.

Activities include book clubs, breakfast clubs, luncheons, game groups such as Bridge, Mexican Train, Canasta, Hand & Foot, Poker, Bunco and Scrabble. There are coffees, needlework, and singles groups. There are also activities for couples -- gourmet dinners, Bunco, Bridge, Poker, and wine tasting groups.

The Granite Bay and Folsom Breakfast Group of Roseville Area Newcomers and Neighbors meets for breakfast 8:30 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month at Susie's Country Kitchen Café in Granite Bay at the corner of Douglas and Auburn-Folsom Roads. Ride to Walk

Ride To Walk is a year round nonprofit therapeutic riding program for handicapped children that coordinates physical and emotional therapy into a unique experience. The program is specifically designed to address the needs of children who are neurologically handicapped. The goals of the program are based on therapeutic intervention to acheive increased balance and control, improved language and socialization skills while enhancing self esteem and providing exercise and enjoyment.

The group serves children in a four county area and runs the program Wednesday through Saturday. They are always looking for volunteers.

Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Granite Bay meets 12:15 p.m. each Friday at Piatti Restaurant on Douglas Boulevard in Roseville. This month's meetings are scheduled for Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Rotary members are business, professional and community leaders, chosen by their peers, who work as volunteers to improve the quality of life in their home and world community.

VFW

The Leslie W. Royall III Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9869 of Granite Bay meets on the second Thursday of each month (Jan. 10) at Round Table Pizza on Douglas and Auburn-Folsom. They begin with a pizza social hour from 6-7 p.m. and conclude with a meeting at 7 p.m.

Last month, the post received a donation of $1,000 from the Placer County Association of Realtors. The money will be used to support Veterans.

The VFW is open to any veteran who was stationed overseas during wartime.
